Physiotherapy in Cannock

Physiotherapy in CannockHello and welcome back again to the ThreeSpires Physiotherapy Blog where we take a look at all things physiotherapy and health related. Now that we have completed looking at our physiotherapy services in Cannock I thought we should move onto another area that our physiotherapist visit and have a look at how we provide physiotherapy in Cannock plus the types of treatments and services we offer to our physiotherapy patients in Cannock and surrounding areas such as Hednesford, Norton Cane and Heath Hayes. Future blogs will contain more detail about each of the specific physiotherapy services that we deliver in Cannock but for now I thought that it might be helpful for prospective patients to have an overview of the services and what kinds of physiotherapy we deliver in Sutton Cannock.

Our Physiotherapy Services in Cannock

To begin, clearly one thought that anyone reading this blog who is unfamiliar with our physiotherapy service will have is "why am I talking so much about our physiotherapy service specifically in Cannock?" This is a fair question: we are a home visit physiotherapy service and all of our physiotherapists travel out to their patients at home. So it is really important that we let people know what kinds of physiotherapy we are offering in each area and in this case what our physiotherapists are providing in Cannock.

So, what is it that we actually provide in the way of physiotherapy in Cannock? Well firstly as I said earlier a key part of our service is that we offer home visit physiotherapy in Cannock. This means that we do not actually have a physical clinic and that everyone of our physiotherapists see their patients at home or in another place of residence for example: a nursing home in Cannock. In the next blog we will look in more at the difference between our home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock and going to an actual physical clinic in Cannock and why in our opinion having one of our physios visit you will be the better option. However in order to avoid this blog getting too long we shall just look on at what physiotherapy services we offer in Cannock. Okay, so what are the physiotherapy services that we provide in Cannock?

1. Musculo-Skeletal Physiotherapy in Cannock:

Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy in CannockMusculoskeletal physiotherapy is one of the very most popular types of physiotherapy that we deliver in Cannock and involves helping anyone with a pain or problem that comes from either part of the skeleton or muscles or ligaments/tendons. Clearly this could involve almost any kind of injury or pain from a vast range of sources. Common musculoskeletal problems that our physios see and help patients in Cannock with include back pain, neck pain, shoulder impingement, golfer’s elbow and Achilles tendinitis. Treatment for musculoskeletal problems is varied but generally will involve a combination of manual therapy such as massage or spinal manipulation and a program of exercises aimed at strengthening and allowing the patient to get themselves better. Our physiotherapists are very experienced at helping patients in Cannock with musculoskeletal problems and there are a large number of testimonials available on our website that describe how we have helped our patients. We also have a Facebook page and Google+ page where you can view recommendations and reviews describing how we have helped patients.

I always think that examples of the ways in which our physiotherapy service works helps explain things, so here is an example of how a typical patient with a musculoskeletal problem such as knee pain after running would be helped by our physiotherapy service. Our patient is a female in her late 40s, living in Cannock, who has started running about 3 months ago with the aim of doing a marathon in 6 months. Things had started well and she had been building things up and had got up to running 13 miles but then disaster struck and she developed knee pain. At this point she contacted us and one of our physiotherapists went out to her home in Cannock and conducted an assessment to determine what was causing her knee pain and what could be done about it. The session revealed a number of key issues: firstly she had built up her running too quickly and had not given her body time enough to adapt and secondly she had some clear weaknesses in terms of both her balance and hip strength. So, our physiotherapist developed a management plan, aimed at getting her back to running, to build up the distance more slowly and also to improve her balance and hip strength. Manual treatment was also provided to loosen up a few tight areas and aid recovery. Over the next few months and few visits from our physiotherapist to her home in Cannock, her knee pain went away and she was able to eventually complete the marathon.

2. Neurological Physiotherapy in Cannock:

Neurological Physiotherapy in CannockAn extremely important and useful part of the physiotherapy service that our physios deliver in Cannock is neurological physiotherapy. This involves working with patients who have a neurological condition which could potentially be something that has recently occurred like a stroke or it could be a long term neurological condition such as Parkinson’s Disease. With neurological physiotherapy our physiotherapists complete a detailed assessment which looks at strength, balance, gait, movement patterns and functional tasks and then they work with their patients to improve these factors for their patients.  Our physiotherapists also give their patients a detailed program of exercises that they complete in between sessions.

Possibly an example of a patient with a neurological condition in Cannock using our physiotherapy services might make it easier to see how things work: the patient was a male in his 70s who lived in Cannock and had recently had a stroke. he had spent a significant period in hospital recovering but had now returned to his home in Cannock and was trying to get back to normality. He had received some community NHS neurological physiotherapy in Cannock but this had recently tailed off and he wanted further support to ensure that he got as much recovery from his stroke as was possible. So, his wife contacted us and one of our physiotherapists visited him at home in Cannock to conduct a neurological physiotherapy assessment. The session revealed a few clear weaknesses and areas that he needed to work on more to improve his recovery. So our physiotherapist developed an exercise and management plan with him and visisted him over the next few months regularly to help him with his exercises and ensure he was continuing to make progress. Eventually the patient had plateaued in terms of recovery but it was decided that he still would benefit from ongoing sessions and at this point our physiotherapist handed over to one of our physiotherapy assistants who then visited the patient regularly, conducted exercises with him and monitored his progress.

3. Physiotherapy for Improving Elderly Mobility in Cannock

Elderly Physiotherapy in CannockBeing a physiotherapy service that provides physiotherapy at home it should be clear to most people that one of the primary benefits of our physiotherapy service is that our patients will not have to do any travelling as our physiotherapists come out to them. Many of our patients (especially those with reduced mobility) find that this aspect of our physiotherapy service is especially helpful and as such our physio service where we work with and try to improve the mobility of our elderly patients in Cannock is extremely popular. This aspect of our physiotherapy service generally comprises of one of our physiotherapists going to the patient at home in Cannock and working on improving their strength and mobility, balance and gait in order to maximise their quality of life.  Again we have a large number of testimonials available via our website or Facebook page that will show how successful we have been with our physiotherapy for elderly mobility in Cannock.

The following case study of an elderly patient in Cannock who had lost mobility but was helped to recover by our physiotherpists might help show how our physiotherapy servcie works: the patient in this case was a female in her mid 80s who lived in Cannock and was previously independently mobile and lived alone. Unfortunately she had recently had an illness and spent some time in hospital but now she had returned home but was very weak and needed help and a frame to stand. So, her family contacted us and one of physiotherapists visited her at her home in Cannock and assessed her strength and mobility. The assessment revealed that although she was improving she needed to improve her strength, balalnce and confidence in a number of areas in order to improve her mobility further. As such our physiotherapist developed a plan of exercises and visited her several times a week for the next few months to ensure that she was doing her exercises and improving. Over the following months her mobility improved and she got stronger and no longer needed help to walk and our physiotherapist slowly reduced the frequency of her sessions and eventually the patient was able to be transferred over to one of our physiotherapy assistants who then was able to visit her every two weeks to ensure that she stayed strong and fit and was doing her exercises.

4. Orthopaedic Physiotherapy in Cannock

Orthopaedic Physiotherapy in CanncokOrthopaedic physiotherapy involves one of our physiotherapists assisting a patient recover from one of the many common orthopaedic procedures such as a hip or knee replacement or a shoulder operation such as a subacromial decompression. This is an extremely popular and helpful part of the home visit physiotherapy service that we provide in Cannock and works especially well for anyone who is struggling with pain in the early days of recovery and is finding it hard to get out of the house.

As our population ages, orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacements are becoming more and more common and we have found the demand for our home visit physiotherapy service to help with recovery from these operations in Cannock increasing. Often these procedures have very long recovery periods and physiotherapy to help strengthen and maximise mobility is extremely important.

The following example of a patient in Cannock recovering from a knee replacement might help illustrate how oru physiotherapy servcie works: in this case our patient was a male in his mid 50s who had recently had a knee replacement (2 weeks earlier) he was recovering well but his NHS communtiy physiotherapy was intermittent and he wanted to ensure that he made the maximum possible recovery. So, he got in contact with us and one of our physiotherapists visited him at home in Cannock to do an assessment. The session revealed that he still had quite restricted range of motion in his knee and that he needed to work harder on his strengthening exercises. As such our physiotherapist devised an exercise and management plan for him to follow and then visited him at home regularly over the next few months until he was at a point where he had recovered well, ahd returned to work and felt that he could self-manage his own recovery.

5. Sports Physiotherapy

Sports Physiotherapy in CannockAs anyone who plays sport regularly a common problem is getting injured and as such a vital part of any physiotherapy service is being able to assess, diagnose and treat sports injuries. Our physiotherapists in Cannock have a large amount of experience of diagnosing and treating patients who have suffered from a sporting injury such as a muscle tear or tendon problem. Our physiotherapy service in Cannock provides the ideal answer to sporting injuries as our physiotherapists are able to provide a comprehensive assessment, diagnose what has happened and provide both the appropriate treatment and form a good management plan designed to get you back into your sport as soon as possible.

The following case study of a patient with a sporting injury in Cannock might help show how the service works: in this case our patient was a male in his mid 30s who was active and had some shoudler pain. He attneded the gym regularly and was struggling with pain in his shoulder during his sessions. As such he contacted us and one of our physiotherapists visited him at home to assess his shoudler and see what was happening. On assessment it was clear that he had strained his rotator cuff and needed to work on rehabbing this. So our physiotherapist devised a specific set of exercises and a management plan of thinsg to avoid and things to work on at the gym. Over the next 6 weeks with a few more visits from our physiotherapist to his home in Cannock his shoulder pain resolved and he was able to return to lifting as usual at the gym.

6. Physiotherapy in Care Homes in Cannock

Physiotherapy in Care Homes in CannockOne of the most important and successful parts of our home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock is our physiotherapy service in care and nursing homes in the Cannock area. Now, I can understand that to some people reading this physiotherapy blog it may seem fairly obvious that we as a home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock we would clearly attend care and nursing homes in Cannock. However, many people (often ex-patients of ours!) are unaware of this, despite being aware of our home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock. Our physiotherapy service in care and nursing homes in Cannock is very successful and our physiotherapists treat a wide range of patients in care homes in Cannock every week.

The following example of a patient in a care home in Cannock receiving physiotherapy should help clarify how our physiotherapy service works and helps patients in care homes in Cannock: our patient in thsi case was an elderly female of 90 years who had recently had a fall at the care home and who was no very anxious on walking and needed assistance. So, her family were very concerned about her mobility and contacted us to see if anything could be done to improve her mobility and stop her falling again. Our physiotherapist then visisted the care home in Cannock and conducted an assessment which showed her to have lost some strength and confidence and also to have poor balance. As such our physio visited the patient several times a week in order to practise exercises and improve her balance and confidence until after a few months she had returned to a point where she was walking independently. At this point in conjunction with her family it was agreed that in order to mainatian her strength and mobility ot would be best that she continued with visits from one of our physiotherapy assistants every week.

7. Paediatric Physiotherapy in Cannock

Paediatric Physiotherapy in CannockOne of the more specialised physiotherapy services that we provide in Cannock is paediatric physiotherapy. This involves having a specialised paediatric physiotherapist assessing and treating children of all ages right through from toddlers to teenagers. Our paediatric physiotherapy service in Cannock is very popular and helps a large number of children and their families recover and maximise their quality of life. Our paediatric physiotherapist is able to help with a range of conditions including torticolis, plagiocephaply, Cerebral Palsy, delayed development and post selective dorsal rhizotomy.

Before we finish I thought it could be helpful for anyone reading the physiotherapy blog for the first time to touch briefly upon a question I often discuss with patients wanting physiotherapy in Cannock.

Why Home Visit Physiotherapy in Cannock?

One of the most common questions or topics that I discuss is the fact that our physiotherapists visit patients in their homes in Cannock rather than having a physical clinic where patients go to. This is often confusing for patients who are used to going to a physiotherapy clinic in Cannock and seeing their physiotherapist there.  Most of our patients in Cannock that we provide physiotherapy understand that having a home visit physiotherapy service will be vital for anyone who is unable to get out of the house easily, such as anybody in a nursing home or who has had a stroke.

Often though some of our patients find it confusing when I explain that we actually, only provide a home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock and that in fact we don't have a physical clinic that they can go to. Many of the patients that we see in Cannock believe (because of previous experience of physiotherapy) that they must go to a physical physiotherapy clinic and that the facilities of a physiotherapy clinic are essential. Having in the past been a physiotherapist in a physiotherapy clinic I can with a high degree of confidence tell you that most patients gain no absolutely zero extra benefit from visiting a physical physiotherapy clinic. In fact these patients would actually be much better served by having the physiotherapist assess and see them in their own home.

Clearly, there will sometimes be some patients in Cannock that we can not help and who need to have further assessment or be able to use specialist equipment and in these cases our physiotherapists always refer them on to which ever service or clinic might be best.

Sometimes when I am discussing our physiotherapy service with prospective patients in Cannock (for example to help with knee pain) they will be concerned that they need to be able to access to machines at a clinic but in reality in most realistic situations in a physiotherapy clinic patients will not be using any gym equipment or specialised machinery. Actually by far the most important resource in a physiotherapy clinic is the physiotherapists which is the reason we make sure that all of our physiotherapists are experienced and extremely good at their job. Now, you may say “well, he would say that wouldn’t he!” however you can check out how well regarded and valued our physiotherapist are by taking a quick look at our testimonials on this website, our Facebook page or our Google+ page. For our patients in Cannock, having their physio do the travelling and come out to them, at home and allowing them to avoid the extra time needed to travel to and from a physiotherapy clinic themselves is a massive help. Often they tell me that they can't believe that they ever used to bother going to a physical clinic.

Okay, that is probably sufficient for now about our home visit physiotherapy service in Cannock and the range of physiotherapy services that we offer. In the next blog post we shall continue looking in more detail at the advantages of our home visit physiotherapy in Cannock over a physical clinic and have a look at what this involves for patients and why in general it will be better to have a physiotherapist visit you at home in Cannock rather than go out to a clinic.
