ThreeSpires Physiotherapy offers neurological physiotherapy for patients who have suffered a brain injury. We are based in Lichfield and serve surrounding areas such as Sutton Coldfield, Tamworth, Rugeley, Walsall and Cannock. This page gives a brief overview of Brain Injuries and how neurological physiotherapy can be helpful.
A brain injury occurs as the result of trauma to the brain, at ThreeSpires Physiotherapy we understand the enormous impact that this can cause to a person's life and also the huge difference that physiotherapy can make in recovering from a brain injury. Brain injuries are caused by a direct impact causing the brain to hit against the skull and cause bleeding and bruising of the brain tissues. Depending on the severity of the trauma a brain injury may be permanent or temporary. The effects of a brain injury are very variable and depend upon the severity of the trauma, the person, the area involved and the amount of brain tissue damaged. Some common symptoms include: dizziness, fatigue, pain, loss of balance, altered sensation, reduced mobility and muscle strength.
Physiotherapy is incredibly important for recovery after a brain injury and once discharged from hospital it is essential that you have access to regular physiotherapy to allow you to achieve your full potential. At ThreeSpires Physiotherapy our physiotherapists will be able to visit you at home and assist you in making the best possible recovery. Physiotherapy treatment after a brain injury obviously depends upon the symptoms that you are experiencing but will usually involve:
- a detailed assessment of how your brain injury has affected you.
- work on improving balance.
- working on coordination.
- trying to improve movement and muscle strength.
- improving sitting and standing posture
Many things that used to be easy and part of your normal life may become very challenging after a brain injury and our physiotherapists will be able to help you to maximise your functional independence. We can also offer advice on specialised equipment such as splints and walking aids that will make your life easier and help to maintain your independence.
