How can ThreeSpires Physiotherapy help me with my foot or ankle?
A physio will come to your home at a time and day of your choosing – avoiding the need to take time off work, attempt to finish early or struggle out of the house if your pain is extremely severe.
A full subjective assessment (discussion with your physio) will be conducted of your lifestyle, past medical history, symptoms, aggravating factors, nature of the condition and any predisposing factors in order to gain a full picture of your foot or ankle pain and the likely causes.
A comprehensive physical examination of your gait, foot posture, strength and range of movement at the feet, ankle and knee and bio-mechanics will then take place. This will enable us to identify and diagnose the underlying cause of your foot or ankle problem and develop an effective treatment plan to alleviate your pain and assist you in returning to full fitness.
Treatment options during the session may include, joint mobilisation, deep tissue massage, stretching, trigger point release, myofascial release techniques, soft tissue release, proprioceptive neuro-muscular facilitation. The appropriate combination of treatment options will be chosen by your therapist and tailored to provide maximum relief for your foot or ankle pain.
Self management is a key part of recovering from any foot or ankle injury and your physio will provide you with an individualised rehabilitation program that is tailored to meet your requirements and goals. Elements included in this program will be: a graded strengthening and exercise program, stretching exercises and self-massage techniques aimed at stopping your foot or ankle pain reoccurring.
What causes foot or ankle pain?
These are extremely complex structures of the body that bear all of our weight and are responsible for mobility. As such they are prone to a wide range of conditions. Some of the more common are described below:
Achilles Tendonitis – the achilles tendon is the large thick bit of tissue at the bottom of your calf that inserts into the heel bone. It is the thickest and one of the strongest tendons in the body but as it bears huge loads and stress from walking, running and jumping it is prone to inury. Achilles tendonitis is inflammation of this tendon often due to repetitive overworking of the tendon. It is common in sports people but anyone can get it and people who work on their feet all day long are prone to it. Flat footedness and a lack of flexibility in the tendon can also cause the inflammation. Symptoms are pain in the bottom of the calf and pain in the heel area which is usually worse in the morning and after periods on your feet.
Ankle Sprain – this is damage to the ligaments that stabilise the ankle. It is almost always the lateral collateral ligaments (ligaments on the outside of the ankle) which are damaged as the ligament on the medial side (inside) the deltoid ligament is immensely strong and tearing this will usually result in a fracture of the bone of the ankle. Symptoms may be an audible pop at the time of inury, followed by swelling, redness, pain and difficulty weight bearing on that ankle.
Plantar Fasciitis – is inflammation of the plantar fascia. This is a fibrous band of tissue that runs along the length of the base of the foot. It provides shock absorption through a spring like mechanism and helps maintain the arch of the foot. People who spend large amounts of time on their feet, do a large amount of running or walking are prone to plantar fasciitis. Overpronation and flat feet can also irritate the plantar fascia. The main symptoms are pain on the underside of the heel or along the foot which is worse in the morning, eases up after a bit and then worsens with prolonged periods on foot.
