Why home visit physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy located in the environment of the home is able to offer benefits that the old style physiotherapy practice located in a physical premises is unable to provide and is widely seen as the optimal method of delivering physiotherapy. Our home visit physiotherapy patients do not have to create additional time in their busy days to visit a practice - instead with our service a physiotherapist will visit you! For many of our patients who work long hours, have difficult commutes and busy lives, this is often of great benefit.
Obviously there are many more advantages to our service than time saving alone; home based physiotherapy facilitates a thorough examination of how your environment at home could be affecting you and your chances of rehabilitation. It also allows our chartered physios to determine more accurately upon the treatment methods and rehabilitation exercises that will fit in best with your lifestyle and condition. For those of our patients with a long-term neurological condition (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) this has been of enormous benefit. It has also helped our patients who are in the process of recovery after a stroke and those who have recently been ill, been admitted to hospital and are now beginning the long journey of rehabilitation and strengthening.
Many of our patients have great difficulty in mobilising at present and the time and effort needed to get to a clinic makes rehab extremely difficult. For these patients home visit physiotherapy is pretty much the ideal solution as it removes the difficulty and time needed to get to a physiotherapy clinic. There are often many reasons for the difficulty with walking that these patients are experiencing such as: they may recently have had surgery (possibly a hip replacement) or they have been ill, been into hospital and become weaker, de-conditioned and lost confidence. Home visit physiotherapy provides a great service for these patients as it removes the need to travel and enables rehabilitation to take place much earlier and in the comfort and safety of the home.
What will it involve?
Once an appointment has been arranged, one of our experienced physiotherapists will visit you at home. Each physiotherapist carries a plinth (massage/assessment table) and a bag with equipment they may need.
The first assessment and treatment session starts with a discussion between your physiotherapist. and yourself. This allows the physiotherapist the time to clarify with you what your main problem is, find out about your goals and also to cover past medical history. Our experience has shown us that this section is vital as it gives you the opportunity to explain what you want and also allows the physiotherapist to formulate a clear plan of how they can help.
A detailed physical examination then commences, this covers many factors including - balance, muscle strength, co-ordination, postural alignment and gait. This section facilitates your physiotherapist identifying any dysfunctions and enables them to determine the underlying cause. In conjunction with the earlier information this is then used to prepare a diagnosis and treatment plan.
The diagnosis made will be explained clearly and your physiotherapist will lead you through the reasoning process that has led to that diagnosis. Experience shows us that in order to achieve the best outcomes with patients it is vital that you have a clear understanding of your problem and our physios will always try to explain things clearly.
The treatment component of the session will then take place - there are many options including spinal manipulation, soft tissue massage, acupuncture and sports massage. Once the session has finished any exercises that you need to complete are detailed and any follow up sessions booked
