Why home visit physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy at home can deliver many benefits that traditional physiotherapy located in a physical clinic just can not deliver and is now becoming accepted as the best way of providing a physiotherapy service. Patients of our home visit physiotherapy service do not need to find extra time in their day to visit a clinic - instead our physiotherapists will come out to you! For people working long hours and busy lives, this can be a great advantage.
Clearly our home visit physiotherapy service offers more advantages than simply time saving; physiotherapy at home allows a detailed assessment of the ways in which the home environment and set up can be affecting you and your condition. It also facilitates the physiotherapist in determining the optimal treatment modalities and exercises that are most likely to work with your lifestyle and condition. Patients with a long-term neurological condition (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) find this to be of great benefit. It also assists our patients who are recovering after a stroke and those who have been admitted to hospital and are now beginning the process of rehabilitation and strengthening.
Many patients that we see are currently experiencing great difficulty with walking and the effort required to visit a clinic would make rehab virtually impossible. In these situations, physiotherapy at home is the ideal solution as it eliminates the difficulty of getting to a physical clinic. The difficulties that they are having with mobilising can have many causes: recent surgery (eg a knee replacement) can create difficulty with weight-bearing; illness and subsequent hospital admission can sometimes reduce strength and confidence. Home visit physiotherapy is a great option for patients such as these, by removing the requirement to travel it allows rehabilitation and recovery to happen earlier and in the safety of the home.
We also offer a specialised paediatric physiotherapy service helping young babies, toddlers and children. With this service we are able to provide visits either at home or in school depending upon which is the most convenient place for therapy to take place.
What will it involve?
After making an appointment - (we run a 7 day service with evening appointments as well , so you should be able to find a time to suit you) , a physiotherapist will visit you at home. Each of our physiotherapists comes equipped with a plinth (massage/assessment table) and a bag containing any other equipment they may need such as massage oil or acupuncture needles.
Each initial assessment begins with a full verbal history being taken in order to get a detailed picture of your situation, your goals and how your condition is affecting you. Next a thorough physical examination is conducted, to see how you move, where you are sore and if there are any joint or tissue restrictions - combined with the verbal information this allows the physiotherapist to formulate a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Your physiotherapist will then explain their diagnosis and discuss with you how this can be best treated- this is an extremely important section as it allows you to understand the nature of your condition and also communicate to your physiotherapist any goals you have or how your would prefer things to proceed.
Treatment will then take place - our physiotherapists have many treatment options available including massage, spinal manipulation, acupuncture, trigger point release, myofascial release and trigger point needling. Finally the physiotherapist will detail any self-management strategies and exercises that you need to do to help improve things yourself and will then book any follow up treatments needed with you.
