This article looks at a common genetic condition that affects a large number of children in the UK and causes some physical difficulties that can be helped by physiotherapy: Down Syndrome.
Down Syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a baby inherits one extra of chromosome 21. Approximately 1 in 1000 babies born in the UK will have Down Syndrome, causes are still unknown but a link has been shown between having a baby at a later age and Down Syndrome. This extra chromosome causes the physical and intellectual changes associated with Down Syndrome: facial features are altered, physical development is often slower with muscle tone being reduced (limbs may seem floppy when young) and intellectual development is also less.
As mentioned above physical development and abilities can also be affected by Down Syndrome and physiotherapy can help children with these difficulties. Our paediatric physiotherapist has experience of helping children with Down Syndrome (and the parents) and will be able to help with a programme of exercises tailored to your child's needs. Commonly children with Down Syndrome will have reduced muscle tone, which can cause difficulties with co-ordination, physical fitness and strength. Hand eye coordination is often reduced causing problems with writing and activities such as sports or games. Physiotherapy can help with improving these difficulties by first assessing the exact cause and nature of the difficulties that your child is facing and then preparing a tailored programme of exercises that aim to help your child build confidence and their ability to do challenging tasks.
Our paediatric physiotherapist provides visits at home, school or nursery for children with Down Syndrome and is available in areas such as Lichfield, Tamworth, Sutton Coldfield, Cannock and Rugeley.
